Product description
What Is a Reflective Hi-Vis Safety Vest?
A reflective hi-vis safety vest — known on site as a hi-vis vest, reflective vest or high-visibility vest — makes the wearer visible from a distance in low light, at night and in areas open to traffic. Visibility comes from two separate materials: by day, the fluorescent background fabric; at night, retroreflective tape that returns headlight beams to their source.
The distinction matters in practice: fluorescent fabric does not glow by itself in the dark — it works in daylight and at dusk. The real source of night-time visibility is the reflective tape. A vest that meets the standard has both, in specified areas.
Mars Wear makes it at its own production facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, with colour, logo and lettering applied to your organisation's requirements; minimum 100 pieces, standard delivery in 15 working days, shipping within Türkiye and abroad.
The Class Rule: Why Is the Vest So Important?
EN ISO 20471 sets the class by the area of material on the garment:
- Class 1 — at least 0.14 m² fluorescent background + 0.10 m² reflective
- Class 2 — at least 0.50 m² + 0.13 m²
- Class 3 — at least 0.80 m² + 0.20 m²
The critical point here: a pair of trousers on its own typically meets Class 1. An upper garment that covers the torso — in other words, a vest — is the most practical and economical way to reach Class 2. If your staff wear reflective work trousers and Class 2 is required, the answer is not to change the trousers but to add a vest over them.
Class 3, on the other hand, is rarely achieved with a single garment; it needs a sleeved top together with full-length legs with tape. For this requirement, rather than a vest, the waterproof reflective work jacket and trousers need to be considered together.
When certified as an ensemble, the areas of both garments are counted together. For more on the classes, see our EN ISO 20471 guide.
Let's Be Clear About Certification
High-visibility clothing is Category II personal protective equipment; certification is issued by a notified body for a specific tested product — not for a fabric or a manufacturer in general.
The vest we make is in a Class 2 configuration: the fluorescent background and reflective tape layout are designed around the area logic of this class. If certified PPE is mandatory at your workplace, state this at the start of the project; the supply of fabric and tape and the certification route are set up accordingly, and we share in writing what is covered.
A Separate Requirement for Private Security Staff
If you employ private security staff, this vest is not a choice but a legal requirement. Article 22 of the Turkish Regulation on the Implementation of the Law on Private Security Services requires private security officers, on night duty, at sports events, concerts and stage shows, to wear over their uniform a vest with the words "ÖZEL GÜVENLİK" (private security) in reflective lettering on the back.
We make this vest with printed back lettering; when planned in the same order as the security trousers, the typeface and logo application match.

Tape Placement and Width
- Reflective tape must be at least 50 mm wide; narrower tape is decorative and does not count towards visibility.
- Our standard layout is horizontal across the chest + horizontal across the back + shoulder tape; the aim is to be seen when sitting and bending too.
- Back lettering is positioned so that it does not interrupt the tape line — cutting the tape for lettering reduces the visibility area.
Colour, Fastening and Size
Colour. Hi-vis yellow is the most common choice on site; it is used alongside orange to tell teams apart on busy sites. The standard defines yellow, orange-red and red for the fluorescent background — red is rarely seen on the market and is a good option for companies whose corporate identity is red. The burgundy model in the images, on the other hand, is a corporate colour option: because it has no fluorescent background, it is not covered by the EN ISO 20471 classes; it is for uses where certification is not needed, for a corporate look and team distinction.
Fastening. Hook-and-loop fastening makes it quick to put on and take off, so it is used for visitors and shift work; a zip is preferred for fixed all-day use.
Size. The one-size adjustable model covers the M–XXL range with a single stock item thanks to its side fastenings, making it ideal for visitors. For permanent staff we recommend the XS–5XL size range, which also allows for a winter jacket worn underneath.
Printed Hi-Vis Vest: Logo, Lettering and Corporate Distinction
A reflective vest is the most visible carrier of your corporate identity on site. Our own design team prepares a layout specific to your company:
On a printed hi-vis vest, the lettering and logo are placed so as not to reduce the fluorescent background and reflective tape areas: print over the tape blocks night-time reflection, and print covering much of the background reduces daytime visibility.
- Logo on the left chest, company name or department across a wide area on the back
- Distinguishing lettering such as "VISITOR", "GUEST", "SUBCONTRACTOR" or "ÖZEL GÜVENLİK"
- Different colour and lettering combinations to distinguish subcontractors, departments or shifts
There is one constraint that everyone overlooks: print or embroidery must not reduce the fluorescent background and reflective areas. A large back print can reduce the area that counts towards the class. We plan the layout with this constraint in mind.
The method is chosen according to how heavily it will be used: transfer print is better for large, multi-colour logos, embroidery where long life is expected. For a comparison, see our logo printing and embroidery guide.
Areas of Use
- Construction sites — to come into the operator's line of sight during plant and crane operations
- Traffic and roadworks — reflection under headlights is the most critical factor in roadside work
- Logistics and warehousing — separating pedestrians and vehicles amid forklift and pallet truck traffic
- Factories and production — telling maintenance, shift and outdoor teams apart by colour and lettering
- Private security — night duty, sports events, concerts and stage shows
- Visitors and inspections — identifying guests, inspectors and subcontractor staff entering the facility
Use in Hot Conditions
Reflective tape is not fabric but a plastic film, and it does not let air through. In summer, adding more tape directly means less comfort. For staff working in hot conditions, see the summer mesh work vest, made from mesh (perforated) knit — the same visibility logic with a noticeably more breathable construction.
For site staff carrying tools and radios, the engineer's vest with pockets is more suitable.
For all the options, see the reflective workwear category.
Ordering and Production Process
- Requirements discussion — quantity, colour, fastening preference, size breakdown, logo and lettering details; whether certified PPE is mandatory.
- Design approval — the logo and lettering layout is prepared so as to preserve the visibility area, and goes into production with your written approval.
- Production — at our own facility, standard delivery in 15 working days.
- Shipping — within Türkiye and abroad, with separate distribution to multiple locations.
Our minimum order is 100. We do not sell from stock; every order is made for your organisation.
Care
- Do not use fabric softener — it leaves a film on the tape surface and reduces reflection.
- Do not use bleach — it directly damages the fluorescent colour.
- Wash at no more than 40 °C, inside out; dry in the shade.
- Do not run the iron over the tape.
- When the tape cracks, dulls or lifts at the edges, the vest has lost its visibility function — the measure is the condition of the tape, not the number of washes.
For details, see our workwear care guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are a fluorescent vest and a reflective vest the same thing? In everyday language both describe the same product. Technically, "fluorescent" refers to the fabric that gives daytime visibility, and "reflective" to the tape that returns light at night. A vest that meets the standard has both.
Is a Class 2 vest enough for every job? It covers most construction site and general health and safety use. Motorway work open to high-speed traffic requires Class 3; in that case a vest alone is not enough, and a sleeved top and trousers need to be considered together.
Is it certified? Certification is issued by a notified body for a specific tested product. If certified PPE is mandatory at your workplace, state it at the start of the project; we set up production and the certification route accordingly.
Do you print "ÖZEL GÜVENLİK" on the back? Yes. For private security staff, we apply the back lettering required by Turkish regulations by print or embroidery.
What is the minimum order? Minimum 100 pieces. As the quantity rises, the unit price falls in tiers.
How should the vest be washed? At no more than 40 °C, without fabric softener or bleach. Fabric softener gradually reduces the reflective performance.
Do you ship abroad? Yes, we ship within Türkiye and abroad.
