What Is a Mandarin Collar, and What Does It Offer?
A mandarin collar — also known as a stand or grandad collar — is an upright knitted band that wraps around the neck and does not fold over. The difference from a polo collar is that it does not lie flat or fold; the difference from a crew neck is that it covers the neckline from higher up.
On this product there is a short button placket below the collar. It is shorter than a polo placket and looks plainer; it makes the garment easy to put on and helps the collar keep its upright shape.
In corporate use, the reason for choosing it is mostly the look. A mandarin collar gives a T-shirt a seriousness close to a shirt, but needs no tie and no collar care. The polo collar's problem of lying flat over time and needing ironing does not exist here — the upright band keeps its shape longer. In large teams, this makes a visible difference by the end of the day.
Its second practical feature is coverage: because the neckline is closed, it gives a neater silhouette. That is why it is chosen for customer-facing staff where the brief is "it shouldn't look like a T-shirt".
Which Collar for Which Team?
- Mandarin collar (this product) — the most covering and plainest look. Needs no collar care.
- Polo work shirt — the most classic corporate option; the collar lies flat, a more familiar silhouette.
- Crew-neck work T-shirt — the most comfortable and most economical; for site and production. The widest area for a back print.
- V-neck work T-shirt — if a large front print is needed.
- Long-sleeved polo — for the change of season.
Rule of thumb: if you are looking for a covering, plain look that needs no collar care, a mandarin collar; if a familiar corporate silhouette is wanted, a polo.
Who Wears It?
Hotels, spas and guest relations — the stand collar sits close to the classic hospitality silhouette and keeps its shape all day.
Premium retail — chosen by jewellery, optician, cosmetics and tech stores for its plain, modern look.
Healthcare groups and laboratory admin staff — reception, patient admissions and admin units. Light blue, white and light green are the most requested shades in this group.
Kitchens and food production — a closed collar looks neater than an open-necked T-shirt; teams mostly wear this model under an apron.
Factory and logistics admin staff — managers and office staff distinguished from the field team by collar. See our factory and production workwear and logistics and warehouse workwear pages.
Office towers, offices and call centres — settings with no shirt requirement where a T-shirt looks too casual.
Hygiene and Certificates — What Is True and What Isn't
It pays to be clear on this, because it is often confused in the sector:
- A T-shirt cannot be HACCP or ISO 22000 "certified". These are a business's food safety management systems, not a certificate for a garment. Clothing has a place in the system as a practice; it does not carry a certificate itself.
- A closed collar is not a barrier. It gives a more covering silhouette, but we do not claim that it stops bacteria or dust getting in. In food production, contamination control is the job of hairnets, aprons, masks and process discipline.
- An antibacterial finish is applied on request. It is a treatment aimed at delaying odour in the fabric. It should be said that its effectiveness decreases with the number of washes and varies by application — so we do not commit to a specific rate or number of washes. If your specification has a measurable criterion, we assess it at the quotation stage together with the fabric supplier's test report.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a textile certificate showing that the fabric contains no harmful chemicals — it is not a hygiene or food safety certificate. We offer a certified fabric option for corporate buyers who ask for it.
In short: this product is perfectly suitable for settings that require hygiene, but protection should be expected from the right process, not from the garment itself.
Fabric and Weight
Piqué (standard) — a textured surface and a corporate look. Our default choice for this product.
Single jersey — smooth and soft; gentler on the skin, preferred for teams who wear it for long periods.
Cotton-polyester blend — shrinks less, keeps its colour longer and needs little ironing. Practical for settings with frequent washing.
For weight, 180 g/m² is the right starting point for most uses; for a fuller handle, 200–220 g/m² is preferred. Some shrinkage in the wash is normal with pure cotton. For details, see our work T-shirt weight guide and workwear fabric guide.
Colour and Contrast Detail
Our stock colour range covers healthcare shades (white, light blue, light green, cream), dark shades (black, navy, anthracite, burgundy, dark green), and bright and classic shades.
The design opportunity on this model is contrast collar and sleeve binding: it can be made with the body in one colour and the collar band and sleeve hems in another. For companies with two colours in their corporate identity, this is the cleanest way to combine both in one product — the detail can be seen in the product images.
Custom colours are produced to a Pantone reference; the quantity and lead time are planned separately.
Logo Embroidery and Print
Left chest embroidery is our standard choice on this product. The piqué texture holds embroidery well and leaves a corporate finish. For teams such as healthcare and hotels, a name or department can be embroidered next to the brand logo as a second application.
For the back and larger applications, transfer print, screen print or DTF is used. For a comparison of methods, see our articles Embroidery or print — a workwear logo guide and logo printing and embroidery methods.
Size and Cut
XS – 5XL is the standard range; 6XL and above are made on a custom pattern. Because a mandarin collar closes around the neck, collar comfort matters when choosing the size — a collar that is too tight is uncomfortable all day. For large teams we recommend taking measurements rather than guessing.
A mixed size breakdown is handled in a single production run. You can use the workwear size chart page to plan the breakdown.
Custom Design and Production
We produce the garment for your company in terms of body colour, contrast collar and binding shade, button colour, weight and logo placement. Our own design team works out the two-colour combination in line with your corporate identity and prepares a digital placement visual before the sample.
Production takes place at our own facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul; because pattern, cutting, sewing and logo application are under one roof, the revision process is short. We ship within Türkiye and abroad; for multi-branch companies, boxes can be split by size and location for distribution. For the process, see our custom uniform design page.
Order Quantity and Price
The minimum order is 100 — per product line, not per size. The colour and size mix can be arranged freely within this quantity.
The unit price is calculated from the fabric type, weight, antibacterial finish, contrast detail, logo method and quantity together. You can see the current unit price by entering your quantity in the calculator on this page and request a quote with the “Request a quote for this product” button on the same screen.
For multi-branch and multi-item orders, we work out an annual framework price — contact us through the quote form. For budget planning, see our workwear prices and cost guide, and for our minimum quantity structure, the bulk logo workwear production from 100 pieces page.
Care
Wash at 30–40 °C, with similar colours and inside out. Bleach should not be used — it fades the colour, weakens the cotton and breaks down the finish on antibacterial fabric.
On a mandarin collar, the collar band is the part that wears most; washing inside out keeps its upright shape. High-heat drying increases shrinkage in cotton; drying in the shade is recommended. Do not iron directly over embroidery or print.
For details, see our workwear care instructions page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are a mandarin collar and a stand collar the same thing?
Yes. A mandarin collar — also called a stand or grandad collar — is an upright band that wraps around the neck and does not fold over.
Does this model have buttons?
Yes, there is a short button placket below the collar. It is shorter and plainer than a polo placket. If a completely buttonless variant is needed, it can be planned as custom production.
How does it differ from a polo collar?
A polo collar lies flat and can lose its shape over time; a mandarin collar stands upright and needs no ironing or collar care. It looks plainer and more covering.
Can it be used in food production?
It can, and it commonly is — but the garment itself is not a hygiene barrier or a HACCP certificate. Contamination control comes from hairnets, aprons and process discipline.
Is there an antibacterial fabric option?
Yes, an antibacterial finish is applied on request. Because its effectiveness decreases with washing, we do not commit to a specific rate or number of washes; if your specification has a measurable criterion, we assess it together with the supplier's test report.
Can you make it in two colours?
Yes. It can be made with the body in one colour and the collar band and sleeve hems in another — the cleanest solution for companies with two colours in their corporate identity.
What is the minimum order?
100 pieces, and this quantity is per product line, not per size.
Do you ship abroad?
Yes. Production takes place at our own facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul; we ship within Türkiye and abroad.
