Product description

What Is a Gabardine Work Jacket?

A gabardine work jacket (gabardine jacket for short) is a winter work jacket made from 100% cotton tightly woven fabric. This model is made with a 7/7 gabardine outer fabric and a quilted (diamond-stitched) padded lining inside; it is navy, with grey reflective tape across the chest.

The silhouette is the classic work jacket: shirt collar, full-length zip with a concealed placket, and an elasticated waist and cuffs. The elasticated waist stops the jacket flapping in the wind and keeps air out — a practical detail for teams who stay outdoors on site for long periods.

At Mars Wear we make the gabardine work jacket at our own production facility. Fabric, lining thickness, colour, pocket layout, reflective placement and logo application are decided for your organisation. Our minimum order is 100 pieces; we ship within Türkiye and abroad.

Why Cotton Gabardine? How It Differs From a Synthetic Jacket

This is the most important choice in winter workwear, and it is often skipped by looking only at the price:

  • Cotton gabardine (this jacket): Breathes, does not hold sweat and does not feel stiff against the skin. It does not build up static, and unlike synthetic fabrics it does not melt on contact with sparks — in environments with a risk of sparks, such as welding, grinding and machining, this is a decisive safety difference. It softens with washing and lasts a long time.
  • Synthetic/taslan jacket (Winter Work Jacket): Lighter, water repellent and windproof. An advantage on wet and windy outdoor sites; but it falls behind cotton on breathability and spark safety.

Rule of thumb: If your team works with sparks, hot surfaces or metalworking, cotton gabardine; if rain and wind are your priority, a taslan jacket is the right choice. If rain and night-time visibility are needed together, see our waterproof reflective work jacket.

What Does "7/7 Gabardine" Mean?

In the Turkish workwear trade, gabardine fabrics are referred to by yarn count — 7/7, 14/14, 16/12 and so on. These numbers show the fineness of the warp and weft yarns, and the smaller the number, the thicker the yarn:

  • 7/7: Thick yarn, a heavy, dense weave. The standard for winter jackets and quilted production — this is the fabric of this product.
  • 14/14: Medium thickness; common in trousers and jackets worn all year round.
  • 16/12: Fine yarn, a light fabric. Preferred for summer and unlined production.

So "7/7" is not a quality label but the fabric's weight class. If you are looking for a winter jacket, this is the number you want.

Quilted or Unquilted?

Gabardine jackets fall into two groups on site:

  • Quilted (winter) — this product: Has a padded lining with diamond quilting inside. The quilting stops the fill clumping and shifting in the wash and keeps the jacket's shape.
  • Unquilted (summer): Unlined, single-layer gabardine; worn in the hot months and indoors.

For teams on site all year round, planning both with the same pattern and the same corporate look is the most efficient solution. We can also make the summer version with the same colour and logo layout.

It Has Reflective Tape — But It Is Not a Certified Hi-Vis Garment

  • This jacket: Reflective tape on a navy body. It gives night-time visibility under vehicle headlights.
  • Certified high-visibility garment (EN ISO 20471): The standard does not only require tape; it also requires fluorescent (hi-vis yellow/orange) background material over a set area. Adding tape to a dark body does not meet this classification.

If the work is at the roadside or on a motorway, amid live traffic, or a visibility class is defined by regulations, you need a product with a fluorescent background — wearing the reflective hi-vis safety vest over this jacket is a common and practical solution. We clarify together before ordering which site needs which.

Areas of Use

  • Metalworking, welding and machining: How cotton fabric behaves around sparks is decisive here; synthetic jackets are not chosen for these environments.
  • Factories and heavy industry: On lines with heavy friction and wear, the durability of gabardine stands out. Take a look at our factory and production workwear category.
  • Construction sites: Winter site use; with a hi-vis vest in sections open to traffic.
  • Warehousing, logistics and outdoor loading bays: See the full set on the logistics and warehouse workwear page.
  • Maintenance, technical service and workshop teams: The sleeve pocket and flapped chest pockets hold small equipment.
  • Municipal, infrastructure and parks teams: Winter outdoor work.

If you want a sleeveless alternative from the same fabric family, our reflective gabardine winter work gilet can be worn under a jacket or on its own.

Colour, Logo and Custom Design

Standard production is navy; black, anthracite, khaki and grey are also common choices. Dark shades do not show stains on site. If your corporate colour is different, we can match the body, collar and reflective placement to it.

For the logo, left chest embroidery is the most durable method on gabardine; the back offers a wide area for the company name and department, and the sleeve is used for a crest or project code. Our own design team plans the placement so as not to cover the reflective tape and presents it for your approval before production — see our logo printing and embroidery guide.

Sizes and Fit

The jacket is cut wider than standard so that a fleece or sweatshirt can be worn underneath. It is produced in XS–5XL, in men's and women's patterns; we make special sizes when larger sizes are needed. For detailed measurements, see our workwear size chart guide.

Quantity, Pricing and Lead Time

We do not sell the jacket from stock; we produce every order for your organisation.

  1. You send us your requirements: quantity, colour, lining thickness, pocket and reflective layout, size breakdown and logo details.
  2. Our design team prepares the logo and reflective placement and presents them for your approval.
  3. If you wish, we make a physical sample before production.
  4. After approval, production starts at our own facility — 15 working days.
  5. Shipping is within Türkiye and abroad.
  • Minimum order: 100 pieces
  • Price: The unit price falls in tiers as the quantity rises — an advantage of about 12% at 500 pieces, 18% at 1,000 and up to 25% at 2,500 pieces and above. You can see the average unit price for your quantity in the calculator on this page.
  • What affects the price: the fabric's yarn count, lining thickness, number of pockets, length of reflective tape, logo area and method.

Care

The jacket should be washed at no more than 40 °C, inside out. Fabric softener should not be used — it reduces the reflective tape's performance. High-heat drying is not recommended; drying flat helps the quilted lining keep its shape. Cotton gabardine may shrink slightly in the first washes; we allow for this when choosing sizes. For details, see our workwear care guide page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a cotton gabardine jacket or a synthetic taslan jacket?

If there are sparks, hot surfaces or metalworking, cotton gabardine; if rain and wind are your priority, a water-repellent taslan jacket is more suitable. Cotton breathes and does not build up static; synthetics are lighter and water repellent.

What does 7/7 gabardine mean?

It shows the fabric's yarn count; the smaller the number, the thicker the yarn. 7/7 is a thick, heavy winter weave, while 16/12 is a fine summer fabric.

Is this jacket a certified high-visibility (hi-vis) garment?

No. The reflective tape on the navy body gives night-time visibility; the EN ISO 20471 classification also requires fluorescent background material. If certified visibility is needed, we recommend wearing a hi-vis safety vest over this jacket.

Is there an unquilted (summer) version?

Yes. We make an unlined summer version with the same pattern and corporate look.

Can the lining be made thicker?

Yes. For colder site conditions we increase the fill thickness of the quilted lining.

Is the sleeve pocket standard?

Yes, standard production includes a sleeve pocket. We can rework the pocket layout around the equipment your team carries.

Do you produce a women's pattern?

Yes. The jacket is produced in men's and women's patterns, in XS–5XL.

What is the minimum order?

100 pieces. As the quantity rises, the unit price falls in tiers.

Do you produce and ship abroad?

Yes. We ship from our own production facility within Türkiye and abroad.
