What Are Reflective Work Trousers?

Reflective work trousers make staff who work around vehicle traffic, plant or in low light noticeable. Visibility is produced by two separate materials together: by day, the fluorescent background fabric; by night, reflective tape that sends headlight beams back.

Mars Wear produces them at its own facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, with a pattern and logo specific to your organisation, from a minimum of 100 pieces, and ships within Türkiye and abroad.

The Question of Class: What Do Trousers Alone Achieve?

The standard for high-visibility clothing is EN ISO 20471, and it sets the class according to the area of material on the garment:

  • Class 1 — at least 0.14 m² of fluorescent background + 0.10 m² of reflective material
  • Class 2 — at least 0.50 m² of fluorescent background + 0.13 m² of reflective material
  • Class 3 — at least 0.80 m² of fluorescent background + 0.20 m² of reflective material

This is where buyers are most often misled: trousers alone typically meet Class 1. Class 2, and Class 3 in particular, need a top garment that covers the body — for Class 3, the standard calls for a sleeved top or full-length taped legs together.

When certified as an ensemble, the areas of the two garments are counted together. So if your team needs Class 2 or 3, the right question is not "which trousers" but "what do the trousers + top garment give together".

For details of the classes and which is needed for which job, see our EN ISO 20471 reflective classes guide.

Fluorescent Background or Tape Only?

It is important to make this distinction, because both are sold as "reflective" on the market:

  • Trousers with a fluorescent background — yellow or orange fluorescent fabric panels on the legs + reflective tape. They give visibility both by day and by night. This is the genuine high-visibility product within the standard.
  • Dark trousers reinforced with tape — reflective tape on a navy or grey body. Noticeable in headlights at night, but with no contribution to daytime visibility. They do not carry a visibility class in the sense of the standard.

The second is not a wrong product — it is a deliberate choice for jobs where soiling is a problem and there is no direct exposure to traffic. But it does not give daytime protection to a team that goes out into traffic. We decide together at the start of the project which team needs which.

Tape Placement and Width

  • Reflective tape must be at least 50 mm wide; thinner tape is decorative and does not count towards visibility.
  • Our standard placement is circumferential tape below the knee and at calf level; the aim is to be noticed from every angle.
  • A third band can be added on the side of the thigh — it increases visibility in a seated position (in vehicles, on forklifts).
  • The tape is stitched according to the fabric grain; it does not cross the knee, so it does not crumple and scatter light when crouching.

Colour Options

Yellow and orange are standard for the fluorescent background. For jobs with heavy soiling, the lower leg or knee area is made in a navy/black combination — visibility is kept on the upper leg while the area that gets dirty ages more slowly.

If you have a corporate colour, our own design team works out a combination that can be applied without reducing the fluorescent area.

Pocket Layout

Standard: 2 side pockets + 2 back pockets. On request, a flapped cargo pocket is added on the side of the thigh, for teams carrying tools and measuring devices. When a cargo pocket is added, care is taken that the flap does not break the reflective tape — the pocket placement is designed around the tape line.

For teams who kneel to work, knee reinforcement (double layer or a Cordura patch) and a pocket for pocket knee pads can be added.

Which Teams Are They For?

  • Road, motorway and bridge maintenance teams — directly exposed to traffic; this is where the highest class is needed
  • Energy, natural gas and water network field teams
  • Logistics warehouses and areas with forklift traffic
  • Construction — areas where plant moves
  • Municipal services companies — refuse collection, street sweeping, parks and gardens
  • Parcel delivery and last-mile delivery
  • Fuel station and car park attendants
  • Event traffic marshals

If You Need a Certified Product

High-visibility clothing is Category II personal protective equipment; certification is issued by a notified body for a specific tested product — not for a fabric or a manufacturer in general.

That is why we speak plainly: if certified PPE is mandatory in your workplace, tell us at the start of the project. Fabric and tape supply, the pattern and the certification route are set up accordingly; we share in writing what is and is not covered. If there is no requirement, this product is corporate work trousers with high-visibility features.

Logo Application — Without Spoiling Visibility

On high-visibility clothing, the logo carries a constraint that everyone skips: print or embroidery must not reduce the fluorescent background and reflective area. A large print can lower the area that counts towards the class.

On trousers, the safe areas are the side of the thigh and the back waist, outside the tape line. On thick fabric, embroidery is the most durable method. For a comparison of methods, see our logo printing and embroidery guide.

Complete the Set

For teams that need Class 2–3, trousers alone are not enough; they should be planned together with a top garment.

For all options, see the reflective workwear category.

Ordering and Production Process

  1. Needs discussion — is the team exposed to traffic, what hours do they work, is certified PPE mandatory.
  2. Construction decision — fluorescent background or dark body + tape; tape placement, cargo pocket, knee reinforcement.
  3. Sample — pattern, fabric and tape approval with a physical sample.
  4. Design approval — the logo position is set so that the visibility area is preserved; it goes to cutting with your written approval.
  5. Production — standard delivery 15 working days.
  6. Shipping — within Türkiye and abroad, delivered to multiple sites.

Our minimum order is 100. For the size breakdown, you can use our workwear size chart guide.

Care

Reflective tape has a shorter life than the fabric, and care affects this directly:

  • Do not use fabric softener. It leaves a film on the surface of the tape and reduces retroreflection.
  • Do not iron over the tape. Heat permanently damages the microprism structure.
  • Wash at 40 °C, inside out, with zips and buttons closed.
  • When the tape cracks, dulls or lifts at the edges, the trousers have lost their visibility function — the measure is the condition of the tape, not the number of washes.

For details, see our workwear care guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these trousers Class 2? Trousers alone typically meet the Class 1 area. For Class 2 and 3, assessment as an ensemble with a top garment that covers the body is needed.

Are they certified? Certification is issued by a notified body for a specific tested product. If certified PPE is mandatory in your workplace, say so at the start of the project; we set up production and the certification route accordingly.

Do you make dark reflective trousers? Yes. But dark trousers are noticeable at night thanks to the tape and make no contribution to daytime visibility. For teams exposed to traffic, we recommend a fluorescent background.

How many washes does the tape last? We do not give a number of washes — the result depends on temperature, fabric softener and drying method. The measure is the visible condition of the tape: if it is cracked, dull or lifting at the edges, it should be replaced.

Can a cargo pocket be added? Yes, a flapped cargo pocket on the side of the thigh. The pocket placement is designed so that it does not break the reflective tape.

Do you produce a women's pattern? Yes, women's and men's patterns are developed separately. Size range XS–5XL, with larger special sizes.

What is your minimum order? 100 pieces.

Do you ship abroad? Yes, we ship within Türkiye and abroad.
