What Is a Softshell Gilet?

The softshell gilet — the softshell work gilet long known in our catalogue as the micro gilet — is a sleeveless top layer that does one job very well: it blocks the wind.

In cool weather, the real reason people feel cold is not the temperature but the wind. Staff wearing a fleece or sweatshirt lose heat quickly on a windy warehouse loading bay or in an open car park, because knitted fabrics let air through. A softshell gilet stops that air, covering the torso while leaving the arms completely free.

Its second defining feature is how thin it is. Because it is unpadded, it has none of the bulk of a padded gilet; it goes under a jacket, coat or rain jacket without bunching. That is why most companies plan it not as a standalone product but as the mid piece of a layering system.

The third is its look. The flat, matt softshell surface looks more corporate than the fuzzy texture of a fleece gilet, and a printed logo comes out sharp and flat on it. The model pictured is black; black shows the least dirt and is the colour on which a logo reads most clearly. The difference shows with staff who go to customers' doors or into meetings.

Which Gilet for Which Need?

There are five different gilets in the catalogue, and the choice depends on what you want protection from:

  • Softshell work gilet (this product) — if the problem is wind. Thin, stretchy, corporate; it also fends off light rain. The option with the lowest thermal insulation.
  • Fleece work gilet — if the problem is cold and the setting is indoors. Warmer and more breathable, but it lets the wind through.
  • Fleece-lined work gilet — both at once. The woven outer blocks the wind, the fleece lining warms.
  • Branded padded gilet — thick padding; fleece-lined or unlined, with an optional reflective band. Worn on its own as the outer layer on cold sites.
  • Padded work gilet — high insulation, as an outer layer; for cold outdoor areas.

The practical rule: wind — softshell; cold — fleece; both — fleece-lined; hard cold — padded.

If a sleeved top layer is needed, the gilet can be planned together with the winter work jacket — the gilet in the mid-season, the jacket in the cold. The jacket's outer fabric is water-repellent and windproof; if a stretchy, breathable construction is wanted, the softshell work jacket, made on the same fabric logic, can be chosen.

Who Wears It?

Warehouse, logistics and dispatch teams — on open loading bays and in work that moves between inside and outside, wind is the biggest comfort problem; free arms are critical in handling. You can browse our logistics and warehouse workwear category.

Factory admin and technical support staff — staff moving between the production floor and the office; its thin construction is no bother indoors. There are more details on our factory and production workwear page.

Field sales and customer representatives — roles that need to look corporate getting out of the car at a customer's door.

Technical service and installation teams — chosen because it does not restrict arm movement when using tools.

Car park, facility and estate management — roles with constant movement between indoors and outdoors.

Event, trade fair and organisation teams — worn over the uniform to create a team look; the back area is used for the organisation's name.

Corporate gifts and onboarding sets — a branded softshell gilet looks noticeably more valuable than a fleece gilet in a gift package. Our corporate gifts and workwear strategy article shows the way.

Fabric: What Softshell Does and Doesn't Do

The softshell used in this gilet is made by bonding a woven outer face with a fleece inner face. The tight weave on the outside blocks the wind and is coated with a water-repellent finish; the thin fleece inside softens the surface against the skin and holds some heat. Thanks to the elastane content, the fabric stretches with movement, so the gilet does not ride up when the arms are raised.

Its limits need saying clearly too:

  • It is not rainwear. The surface is water repellent; it copes with drizzle and short showers but gets wet in constant rain. If you need a sleeved, waterproof softshell, the softshell work jacket is the right choice.
  • Its thermal insulation is low. Because it is unpadded, it is not a winter product on its own; in the cold, a fleece or sweatshirt goes underneath.
  • It is not flame- or cut-resistant. Welding, cutting and similar special risks require the relevant PPE.

For fabric options, see our workwear fabric guide page.

Logo Application: A Printed Softshell Gilet

On this gilet the logo is applied by printing; embroidery is not recommended. An embroidery needle pierces the fabric and weakens the softshell's wind- and water-blocking surface at those points. A print sits on the surface without piercing the fabric.

Transfer print or DTF is used for the left-chest logo and for back applications; it gives a sharp result even with multi-colour logos. Because it is a sleeveless product, the back area is flatter and wider than on sleeved jackets; a company name and department lettering come out very cleanly here.

An important note: sublimation printing can only be used on white and very light-coloured bodies for this product. Sublimation dye does not show on dark fabric; transfer or DTF print is used on black, navy and anthracite bodies. Our own design team sets the logo size and position and sends a digital mock-up for your approval before production. For a comparison of methods, see our logo printing and embroidery methods guide.

Size and Cut

XS – 5XL is the standard range. The gilet is cut slightly generously around the chest so that a sweatshirt or fleece can go underneath.

Sleeveless products have a wider size tolerance than sleeved jackets; this softens the consequences of size breakdown errors in large teams. Even so, for corporate orders we recommend taking measurements rather than guessing — you can use the workwear size chart page for the breakdown.

Custom Design and Production

We produce the gilet for your company in terms of colour, binding detail, pocket layout and logo placement. Our own design team works out the colour combination in line with your corporate identity, plans department-based colour distinctions within a single order where needed, and prepares a digital placement visual before the sample.

Production takes place at our own facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul; because pattern, cutting, sewing and logo application are under one roof, the revision process is short. We ship within Türkiye and abroad; for multi-location companies, boxes can be split by size and branch for distribution. For the process, see our custom uniform design page.

Wholesale Softshell Gilet Prices

The minimum order is 100 — per product line, not per size. The colour and size mix can be arranged freely within this quantity.

The unit price is calculated from the fabric, colour, logo method, number of application areas and quantity together; as the quantity rises, the pattern and set-up costs are spread over more pieces, so the unit price falls.

You can see the current unit price by entering your quantity in the calculator on this page and request a quote with the “Request a quote for this product” button on the same screen. For companies planning the gilet and jacket together, we work out a framework price — contact us through the quote form. We explain our minimum quantity structure on the bulk logo workwear production from 100 pieces page.

Care

Wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out. Fabric softener should not be used — it reduces softshell's breathability and damages the water repellency. Do not use bleach.

Spin at a low speed and hang to dry; a tumble dryer is not recommended. Water repellency fades over time: if water no longer beads on the surface but spreads into the fabric, it can be refreshed with a DWR spray. Do not iron directly over the print. For details, see our workwear care instructions page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it differ from a fleece gilet?

A fleece gilet lets the wind through but is warmer and more breathable. A softshell gilet blocks the wind, has a water-repellent surface and looks more corporate; on the other hand, its thermal insulation is lower. Fleece is the right choice indoors, softshell in windy outdoor areas.

Is it enough on its own for winter?

No. It is an unpadded product; in winter a fleece or sweatshirt needs to go underneath. Cool and mild days suit it on its own.

Can it be worn in the rain?

It copes with drizzle and short showers. It gets wet in constant rain; if rain is the main risk, a waterproof product is needed.

Embroidery or print?

Print. Embroidery is not recommended on softshell; the needle pierces the fabric and weakens its wind- and water-blocking surface. Transfer print or DTF is used on the left chest and back. Sublimation can only be used on white and very light-coloured bodies.

Is the micro gilet the same as the softshell gilet?

Yes. The product long known in our catalogue as the micro gilet is this softshell work gilet.

Does it go under a jacket?

Yes — because it is unpadded and thin, it does not bunch at the shoulders. It is widely used as the mid piece in a layering system.

What is the minimum order?

100 pieces, and this quantity is per product line, not per size.

Do you ship abroad?

Yes. Production takes place at our own facility in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul; we ship within Türkiye and abroad.
